March 13th was a great day for Kanab Area Chamber members and guests to visit the

new Springhill Suites by Marriott for the monthly Chamber luncheon. The gorgeous

lobby and breakfast area were readied for the event by general manager Jessie Riddle

and his team. Jessie welcomed everyone to the property. Next, Chamber secretary Don

Jennings kicked off the program with highlighting new and renewing Chamber

members, mentioning that the delicious lunch was from Chamber member Honey’s deli,

and then introducing guest speaker, April Ficklin, Business Resource Center Outreach

Manager at the Utah Tech University Atwood Innovation Plaza.

April gave an interesting presentation about all that she and her team do to support

businesses in Kane and Washington Counties. She started with innovation and the

process to take new ideas to new creations. She moved on to marketing, explaining the

differences between various values of products and services – functional, economic,

social and experiential. The third part of her presentation focused on the Makerspace at

the Atwood Innovation Plaza at Utah Tech. It’s the largest ‘makerspace’ in Southern

Utah with nearly 8,000 sq/ft of prototyping and manufacturing equipment open to the

public. The Makerspace provides access to equipment, tools, and resources for

individuals to engage in projects. April shared a variety of items that various businesses

had made using this valuable resource, from branded swag, to toys, to printed t-shirts

and more. Find out more about the Makerspace here
